Lemmon Recommends: His Until Midnight
Ohh, do I have a great recommendation for you!
I just finished His Until Midnight and loooooved it. Seriously. Halfway through I knew that I had my next “Lemmon Recommends” title!
First of all, can we agree this cover is amazing?
This was my first Reese Ryan book! She hit my radar when I started writing for Harlequin Desire and I knew I had to check out this lady’s books. First of all… her covers are nothing short of phenomenal and second, she was a new author to me!
His Until Midnight is part of Harlequin Desire’s famous Texas Cattleman’s Club series, which means that the books are intertwined with overlapping characters which makes it a fun continuity. I can imagine it’s a challenge to tell one of these books that will stand alone yet include all of the other folks that need highlighting, but folks, Ryan nailed it! His Until Midnight not only stands alone but showcases the characters that came before and those who will be next beautifully.
Another area where Ryan excels is in the friends to lovers trope, which I have tackled a few times myself! To me, it always feels like heavy lifting to write friends navigating this situation. I found Ryan’s portrayal of friends gliding into lovers seamless. SEAM. LESS. Ryan (the hero who shares a name with our author!) is staunchly aware of his attraction to Tessa, the heroine and has been his best friend for a good fifteen years-plus. But he also knows there’s a delicate balance to keeping things copesetic between their close families on both sides, not to mention Ryan promised Tessa’s brother Tripp he’d never touch her in a romantic way! Add in tomboy Tessa's dreams of marriage, kids and the whole shebang and Ryan knows he’s the wrong man for her. He’s a playboy who prefers entanglements not to be tangled in heartstrings, and himself has been engaged but never in love.
It’s a tantalizing mix of opposites. Add in a bachelor auction, steamy love scenes, and plenty of feelings wrapped up in rooting for these two to make it and you’ve got the perfect read.
Three quick facts about His Until Midnight that make it the perfect Lemmon pick:
Tessa fills in for her sick brother to be the lone bachelorette on the auction block at a bachelor auction… and asks hero Ryan to bid on her because she’s worried no one else will.
Tessa gets a makeover for the auction which changes her appearance and has lots of guys taking notice, but it doesn’t remotely change her personality, which I loved!
Curvy girls shoutout! Yes, Tessa has curves, but it doesn’t cause her even an ounce of pause when she and Ryan become romantically inclined. She’s confident and she’s very much a three-dimensional character worth rooting for!
From the Author
I asked Reese to share some insider facts with us on His Until Midnight. Here’s what she had to say!
Friends-to-lovers is one of my favorite tropes to write because the couple already has a strong bond and so much shared history. Ryan Bateman’s and Tessa Noble’s families own neighboring ranches. Their friendship predates their earliest memories. A lot is at stake should things go wrong between them. So despite the attraction that's been simmering below the surface for the past decade, Tessa and Ryan have chosen not to explore it. Until Tessa's glam makeover puts her on the radar of every other single cowboy in town.
Writing this couple’s teasing banter and fiery love scenes was so much fun. I hope you’ll enjoy the ride as they navigate their friendship and move beyond their fears to find their happy ever after.
About the book:
To the highest bidder goes…
A friendship with benefits?
When Tessa Noble takes the stage at a charity auction after a sexy makeover, her best friend, Ryan Bateman, must place the winning bid. It’s definitely not because he’s jealous. Their weekend getaway is a ploy for positive press…or so the rancher tells himself. But soon things take an unexpected turn from platonic to passionate, catapulting the couple far beyond the friend zone…
