Romanticize Your Life: A Cozy Detox Bath Recipe

Me, in the summer of 2018 at my niece’s outdoor wedding—it was very hot and humid but we had so much fun!

I first shared this detox bath recipe years ago, during a year when I published six books. SIX, YOU GUYS. 🙃

As you can imagine, writing and editing and publishing were constants, and rarely did I take a break. Except for in this photo, when I attended my niece’s wedding.

So, during this busy year, I created a recipe for a detox bath made with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

It’s a soothing way to step into your feminine energy or wind down after a long day. And it makes a great alternative to that evening glass of wine—with alcohol or without.

If you find yourself in need of slowing dow, don’t underestimate the healing power of a ritual in your life, this is a beautiful solution. Escape the bings and buzzes from your phone, ignore your deadline for an hour, and make yourself the priority.

And don’t think of it as a reward for hard work done. Your reward is you, always and forever. That’s a topic I’m incredibly passionate about—romanticizing your one beautiful, precious life. If you agree, make sure you check the link after the recipe below. I have the perfect space for you.

Cozy Detox Bath Recipe

What I love about this bath is the restorative properties of all of these ingredients.

Epsom salts are packed with Magnesium, which is known to relieve muscle soreness and cramps, alleviate stress, and eliminate toxins from the body (including relieving constipation—yeah, I said it). Not to mention (but I will), you’re in a warm bath which already lends itself to relaxing.

Apple cider vinegar is another health warrior. Adding it to a bath can help relieve dry skin, joint pain, and even offer relief for a UTI.

Coconut oil soothes the skin, but be forewarned: you’ll be as slick as a seal when you’re done. BE CAREFUL climbing out of your bath and scrub the floor of the tub after you drain out the water so that you don’t slip in the shower the next day.

Baking soda has natural anti-fungal properties. Even if you don’t have an issue, it’ll kill those cells before they cause something unpleasant.

Lavender oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, plus it smells amazing. It helps promotes sleep, and is so, so soothing to the senses.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salts

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil

  • 5-8 drops of lavender essential oil (optional, you can alternatively buy lavender Epsom salts if you prefer)

Method

  1. Give your bathtub a quick wipe down and plug the drain.

  2. Gather supplies to make your soak more enjoyable. (See my list 👇.)

  3. Add each ingredient to the bathwater and stir it around with your hand.

  4. Sink in, and enjoy.

If you’d like to recreate this exact bath, I’ve gathered my preferred ingredients in one place inside my Amazon storefront. You can find the full Cozy Detox Bath Essentials list here.

Here are a few of my favorite things to take into the tub with me. I’ll give you two lists: Plugged & Unplugged.

Unplugged:

  • A large cup of water with lemon or cucumber slices

  • Your favorite music app (I love this playlist)

  • A few fluffy towels, one for when you get out and one for drying your hand to change the music if needed

Plugged:

  • Cell phone (in case I need to call the hubs for a refill of wine)

  • iPad (for watching Real Housewives)

  • Mini charcuterie plate: vegetables and dip, cheese and crackers, and chocolate

  • Stemware filled with your favorite wine or wine alternative

Additional tips:

  • Burn a candle. I prefer vanilla, but in the winter I am known to burn peppermint or spice fragrances.

  • Set up a footstool and lay out your goodies. It makes a great home for your phone and iPad, towels, and other essentials.

  • Lighting. To further set the mood, turn off the overhead lights. Bring in a table side lamp or use an LED lamp or twinkle lights to give your room a spa-like feel.

  • Drink water. A big glass before you slide in and a big glass after you’re out. This helps flush out toxins that are swimming about in your bloodstream.

  • Give a bath kit to a friend. One Christmas, I packaged up bath kits for friends. I had such a lovely time doing it, and it made for the perfect hostess gift. Just ask Lori Foster! I took one to her when she hosted a holiday brunch.
