I Don’t Believe in Writer’s Block (Here’s Why)

🍋 I don’t believe in writer’s block.

It’s true! I don’t even allow myself to consider that it’s a real thing. I poked fun at this idea in my novel The Billionaire Experience. Brody, my hero, was practically superstitious about it. In the story, he actually had his sister SAGE his house after the words “writer’s block” were mentioned. 😅

But here’s the thing… what most people call “writer’s block” is actually fear. And we tend to hide behind the term as a safe way to mask what that fear really is.

So if you’re a writer who’s thinking:
BUT JESSICA, I AM FREAKING BLOCKED—how do I get out of it?!

Let’s talk about it.

The Truth About Writer’s Block

Writer’s block isn’t a curse, but often a smokescreen of self-doubt, perfectionism, or burnout. If you can name the real obstacle, you can start moving past it. When you label it as “block,” you hand over your power. When you see it for what it really is, you can take your power back.

Here’s what to do instead:

3 Quick Ways to Get Past Writer’s Block

1. Write… Literally Anything

It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t even have to be related to your current project. Write a sentence, a grocery list, or a note for your kid’s lunchbox. Then tell yourself: See? I’m not blocked. I just wrote something. The act of writing—any kind of writing—proves you can do it.

2. Read Someone Else’s Book

Pick up a novel, read a few chapters, and let your mind relax. Sometimes, the quickest cure for creative paralysis is stepping away from your own words and soaking up someone else’s. After all, they've already done the hard work for you.

3. Ask for Help

You don’t have to do this alone. Look for posts like this one that focus on positive solutions rather than dwelling on why you “can’t” write. Follow blogs that share real-world writing tips (like this one!). And if you’re serious about growing as an author, consider joining my author group inside the Lemmon Society for coaching, encouragement, and community.

Why Outside Perspective Matters

When your ideas only live in your head, they tend to fester. Don’t let that happen. Talk it out with someone you trust, share your work-in-progress with a writing buddy, or join a group where others can give constructive feedback.

You Have the Power to Choose Your Thoughts

Every single day, you can choose to believe:

  • You are an amazing writer.

  • Everything is working out for you.

  • You are growing and learning with every word you write.

Writer’s block doesn’t define you. Your persistence and your passion do.

And if you need support, I’m here. 🥰
